WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2002 Mazda Protege5, 2002 Mazda Protege, 2002 Mazda Millenia, 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata, and 2002 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
Locate and remove Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor from air cleaner housing. Place IAT sensor and thermometer in a container of water. Connect ohmmeter between IAT sensor terminals. Slowly heat water. Observe resistance at specified temperatures. See IAT SENSOR RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS (EXCEPT MILLENIA 2.3L & MPV) table. If resistance is not as specified, replace IAT sensor. If IAT sensor is within specification, check for open or short circuit in wiring harness between IAT sensor and PCM. See DTC testing procedure in appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
