Crankshaft Position Sensor
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2002 Mazda Protege5, 2002 Mazda Protege, 2002 Mazda Millenia, 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata, and 2002 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor is located on front of engine, near crankshaft pulley. Disconnect CKP sensor connector. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between terminals "A" and "B" at CKP sensor. See Fig 1
. Resistance should be as specified. See CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR RESISTANCE SPECIFICATIONS
table.

- If resistance is not as specified, replace CKP sensor. If resistance is as specified, measure CKP sensor air gap. Air gap should be .020-.060" (.5-1.5 mm). On Miata, adjust air gap to specification if necessary. On all models, if air gap is not as specified, replace CKP sensor or crankshaft pulley. On MPV, air gap specification is not available.
