WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 2002 Mazda Protege5, 2002 Mazda Protege, 2002 Mazda Millenia, 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata, and 2002 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Disconnect CMP sensor harness connector. CMP sensor is located in timing belt cover, in upper front of engine. Using ohmmeter, measure resistance between CMP sensor terminals. Resistance should be 950-1250 ohms. If resistance is not within specification, replace CMP sensor. If sensor is okay, check for open or short circuit in wire harness between CMP sensor 2-pin harness connector and PCM harness connector terminals No. 85 (Pink wire) and 87 (Blue wire). Check at CMP sensor 2-pin harness connector terminals (Blue wire) or (Pink wire) for short to power or ground. If short is present, repair or replace wire harness as necessary.
