Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. Perform DTC confirmation procedure. See DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Check for DTCs during KOEO self-test. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P1116 is present, go to next step. If DTC P1116 is not present, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  2. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0117 or P0118 is present, repair that problem first. See DTC P0117: ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) SENSOR CIRCUIT, LOW INPUT  or DTC P0118: ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) SENSOR CIRCUIT, HIGH INPUT  . If DTC P0117 or P0118 is not present, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, check ECT V PID data. If ECT V PID is .3-3.7 volts, go to next step. If ECT V PID is not .3-3.7 volts, check for overheating condition or low engine coolant. Repair or replace as necessary and go to next step.
  4. Start engine. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Check for DTCs during KOEO self-test. If DTC P1116 is present, replace PCM and go to next step. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. On vehicles equipped with immobilizer system, reprogram ignition key identification numbers. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES - IMPORT article in GENERAL INFORMATION. If DTC P1116 is not present, go to next step.
  5. Perform DTC confirmation procedure. See DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any other DTC is present, go to appropriate test.
