Diagnosis & Repair Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda 626. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Ensure FREEZE FRAME DATA has been recorded. Check for related service bulletins. Repair as necessary and go to next step.
- Start engine. Using scan tool, select CLT V PID data. While observing CLT V PID data, apply and release clutch pedal. If CLT V PID value is zero volts with clutch pedal depressed and battery voltage with clutch pedal released, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If CLT V PID value is battery voltage with clutch pedal depressed or released, go to next step. If CLT V PID value is zero volts with clutch pedal depressed or released, go to step 7 .
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect clutch switch connector. Check for loose, damaged or corroded connector terminals. Repair as necessary, and go to step 7 . If connector terminals are okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between clutch switch harness connector terminal "C" (Orange wire) and ground. See Fig 1 . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in Orange wire between clutch switch and PCM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary and go to step 7 .
- Turn ignition off. Using scan tool, select CLT V PID data. Connect a fused jumper wire between clutch switch harness connector terminals "C" (Orange wire) and "D" (Black/Yellow wire). See Fig 1 . Turn ignition on. If CLT V PID value switches from zero volts to battery voltage when ignition is turned on, go to next step. If CLT V PID value does not switch from zero volts to battery voltage when ignition is turned on, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between clutch switch and PCM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary and go to step 7 .
- Turn ignition off. Check for continuity between clutch switch connector terminals "C" and "D". See Fig 1 . Apply and release clutch pedal. Continuity should be present, with clutch pedal depressed and should not be present with clutch pedal released. If continuity is as specified, go to next step. If continuity is not as specified, replace clutch switch and go to next step.
- Reconnect all connections. Start engine. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Drive vehicle at speeds more than 16 MPH. Depress and release clutch pedal. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0704 is present, replace PCM and go to next step. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. On vehicles equipped with immobilizer system, reprogram ignition key identification numbers. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES - IMPORT article in GENERAL INFORMATION. If DTC P0704 is not present, go to next step.
- Perform DTC confirmation procedure. See DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any other DTC is present, go to appropriate test.
