WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda 626. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Ensure FREEZE FRAME DATA has been recorded. Check for related service bulletins. Repair as necessary and go to next step.
- Turn ignition off and on. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any other DTCs are present, go to appropriate testing procedure. If no other DTC is present, go to next step.
- Start engine. Disconnect IAC connector. If engine speed decreases, go to next step. If engine speed does not decrease, replace IAC valve and go to step 8 .
- Turn ignition off. Check accelerator cable deflection. Ensure accelerator cable has .06-.16" (1.5-4.1 mm) deflection at throttle body. If deflection is not as specified, rotate nut on end of cable at throttle body until specified deflection is obtained and go to step 8 . If accelerator cable deflection is okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Check cruise control actuator cable free play. Cruise control actuator cable free play should be about .12" (3 mm). If cruise control actuator cable free play is not correct. Remove clip. Pull actuator cable until cable contacts inner side of throttle. Loosen actuator cable until free play is about .12" (3 mm). Install clip and go to step 8 . If cruise control actuator cable free play is okay, go to next step.
- Check for disconnected or misrouted vacuum hoses. Repair as necessary and go to step 8 . If vacuum hoses are okay, go to next step.
- Ensure throttle body closes completely and is not slugged up. Clean or replace throttle body as necessary and go to next step. If throttle body is okay, go to next step.
- Reconnect all connections. Start engine. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Depress brake pedal for 14.1 or more seconds. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0507 is present, replace PCM and go to next step. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. On vehicles equipped with immobilizer system, reprogram ignition key identification numbers. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES - IMPORT article in GENERAL INFORMATION. If DTC P0507 is not present, go to next step.
- Perform DTC confirmation procedure. See DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any other DTC is present, go to appropriate test.
