Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. Perform DTC confirmation procedure. See DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Check for DTCs during KOEO or KOER self-test. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0443 is present, go to next step. If DTC P0443 is not present, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect purge solenoid valve connector. Purge solenoid valve is located on top of left side of intake manifold. Check for loose, damaged or corroded connector terminals. Repair as necessary, and go to step  8 . If connector terminals are okay, go to next step.
  3. Check purge solenoid valve operation. See SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - MIATA, MILLENIA, MPV, PROTEGE, PROTEGE5 & 626 article. Replace purge solenoid valve as necessary and go to step  8 . If purge solenoid valve is okay, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between purge solenoid valve harness connector Red/Black wire terminal and ground. If more than 10.5 volts is present, go to next step. If 10.5 volts or less are present, repair open circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to step  8 .
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM connector. Check for loose, damaged or corroded connector terminals. Repair as necessary, and go to step  8 . If connector terminals are okay, go to next step.
  6. Check for continuity between purge solenoid valve harness connector Yellow/Blue wire terminal and ground. If continuity is present, repair short to ground in Yellow/Blue wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to step  8 . If continuity is not present, go to next step.
  7. Check for continuity of Yellow/Blue wire between purge solenoid valve harness connector and PCM harness connector terminal No. 67. See Figure . If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open in Yellow/Blue wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to next step.
  8. Reconnect all connections. Turn ignition on. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Start engine. Using scan tool, perform OBD II drive mode. See DRIVE MODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0443 is present, replace PCM and go to next step. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. On vehicles equipped with immobilizer system, reprogram ignition key identification numbers. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES - IMPORT article in GENERAL INFORMATION. If DTC P0443 is not present, go to next step.
  9. Perform DTC confirmation procedure. See DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any other DTC is present, go to appropriate test.
