Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. Ensure FREEZE FRAME DATA has been recorded. Check for related service bulletins. Repair as necessary and go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool check for other DTCs. If any other DTC is set, go to that DTC first. If not other DTC is set, go to next step.
  3. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. Check for DTCs during KOEO or KOER self-test. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any other DTC is set, go to that DTC first. If not other DTC is set, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Ensure fuel filler cap is installed correctly. If fuel filler cap is installed correctly, ensure fuel filler cap is original equipment part. Replace as necessary and go to step  13 . If fuel filler cap is okay, go to next step.
  5. Check for damaged or improperly connected vacuum hoses between intake plenum and purge solenoid, purge solenoid and catch tank and between catch tank and charcoal canister. Repair as necessary and go to step  13 . If all vacuum hoses are okay, go to next step.
  6. Check purge solenoid valve, catch tank and charcoal tank operation. See SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - MIATA, MILLENIA, MPV, PROTEGE, PROTEGE5 & 626 article. Replace component(s) as necessary and go to step  13 . If all components are okay, go to next step.
  7. Disconnect charcoal canister vacuum hose at fuel tank. Connect vacuum pump to vacuum hose. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, check FTP V PID data. Apply .5 in. Hg to vacuum hose for one minute. If FTP V PID data indicate vacuum for one minute, go to step  12 . If FTP V PID data did not indicated vacuum for one minute, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition off. Check damaged or improperly connected vacuum hoses between fuel tank and FTP sensor, fuel tank and pressure control valve, fuel filler pipe and pressure control valve and between pressure control valve and charcoal canister. Repair as necessary and go to step  13 . If all vacuum hoses are okay, go to next step.
  9. Check pressure control valve operation. See SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - MIATA, MILLENIA, MPV, PROTEGE, PROTEGE5 & 626 article. Replace pressure control valve as necessary and go to step  13 . If pressure control valve is okay, go to next step.
  10. Check fuel filler pipe for damage. Repair or replace as necessary and go to step  13 . If fuel filler pipe is okay, go to next step.
  11. Check fuel tank for damage. Also ensure fuel tank components are connected properly. Repair or replace as necessary and go to step  13 . If fuel tank and components are okay, go to next step.
  12. Check Canister Drain Cut Valve (CDCV) operation. See SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - MIATA, MILLENIA, MPV, PROTEGE, PROTEGE5 & 626 article. Replace CDCV as necessary and go to next step. If CDCV is okay, check for damaged, misrouted or disconnected hoses between charcoal canister and CDCV. Repair as necessary and go to next step.
  13. Reconnect all connections. Turn ignition on. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Start engine. Using scan tool, perform OBD II drive mode. See DRIVE MODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Using scan tool, access DIAGNOSIS MONITORING TEST RESULTS. Monitor TEST #10:26:00 (EVAP phase 0), #10:27:00 (EVAP phase 2), #10:2A:80 (EVAP vapor gen). If measured value is within specification, replace PCM and go to next step. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. On vehicles equipped with immobilizer system, reprogram ignition key identification numbers. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES - IMPORT article in GENERAL INFORMATION. If measured value is not within specification, go to next step.
  14. Perform DTC confirmation procedure. See DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any other DTC is present, go to appropriate test.
