Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. Ensure FREEZE FRAME DATA has been recorded. Check for related service bulletins. Repair as necessary and go to next step.
  2. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Start engine and allow engine to reach normal operating temperature. Using scan tool, check ECT PID data. If ECT PID is 78°F (25.5°C) of less, go to next step. If ECT PID is more than 78°F (25.5°C), problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECT sensor connector. Check connector for loose or damaged terminals, poor contact or corrosion. If no problem is found, go to next step. If problem is found, repair as necessary and go to step  6 .
  4. Check ECT sensor operation. See SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - MIATA, MILLENIA, MPV, PROTEGE, PROTEGE5 & 626 article. Replace ECT sensor as necessary and go to step  6 . If ECT sensor is okay, go to next step.
  5. Disconnect PCM connector. Check connector for loose or damaged terminals, poor contact or corrosion. If no problem is found, go to next step. If any problem is found, repair as needed and go to next step.
  6. Reconnect all connections. Turn ignition on. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Ensure engine coolant is less than 68°F (20°C). Start engine and allow engine to reach normal operating temperature. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0125 is present, replace PCM and go to next step. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. On vehicles equipped with immobilizer system, reprogram ignition key identification numbers. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES - IMPORT article in GENERAL INFORMATION. If DTC P0125 is not present, go to next step.
  7. Perform DTC confirmation procedure. See DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any other DTC is present, go to appropriate test.
