Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda 626. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Perform DTC confirmation procedure. See DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Check for DTCs during KOEO and KOER self-test. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0118 is present, go to next step. If DTC P0118 is not present, problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECT sensor connector. Check for damaged or corroded ECT sensor connector terminals. Repair as necessary, and go to step  8 . If connector terminals are okay, go to next step.
  3. Using a fused jumper wire, jumper ECT sensor harness connector terminals. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, check ECT V PID data. If ECT V PID data is not about zero volts, go to next step. If ECT V PID data is about zero volts, replace ECT sensor and go to step  8 .
  4. Turn ignition off and remove fused jumper wire. Turn ignition on. Check for battery voltage between ground and ECT sensor harness connector terminal "A" (Orange/Blue wire). If battery voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, repair short to power in Orange/Blue wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to step  8 .
  5. Turn ignition on. Disconnect PCM connector. Check for damaged or corroded PCM connector terminals. Repair as necessary, and go to step  8 . If connector terminals are okay, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition off. Check for continuity of Orange/Blue wire between ECT sensor harness connector terminal "A" and PCM harness connector terminal No. 38. See Figure . If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open in Orange/Blue wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to step  8 .
  7. Check for continuity of Black/Yellow wire between ECT sensor harness connector terminal "B" and PCM harness connector terminal No. 91. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open in Black/Yellow wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Go to next step.
  8. Reconnect all connections. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Perform DTC confirmation procedure. See DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0118 is present, replace PCM and go to next step. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. On vehicles equipped with immobilizer system, reprogram ignition key identification numbers. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES - IMPORT article in GENERAL INFORMATION. If DTC P0118 is not present, go to next step.
  9. Perform DTC confirmation procedure. See DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any other DTC is present, go to appropriate test.
