Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

- Ensure FREEZE FRAME DATA has been recorded. Check for related service bulletins. Repair as necessary and go to next step.
- Start engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature. Using scan tool, check ECT PID data. If ECT PID data is 50°F (10°C) or more, go to next step. If ECT PID data is less than 50°F (10°C), problem is intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECT sensor connector. Check for damaged or corroded ECT sensor connector terminals. Repair as necessary, and go to step 6 . If connector terminals are okay, go to next step.
- Measure resistance between ECT sensor connector terminals. If resistance is about 2 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not about 2 k/ohms, replace ECT sensor and go to step 6 .
- Disconnect PCM connector. Check for damaged or corroded PCM connector terminals. Repair as necessary, and go to next step. If connector terminals are okay, go to next step.
- Reconnect all connections. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Start engine. Run engine under freeze frame data conditions. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0116 is present, replace PCM and go to next step. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. On vehicles equipped with immobilizer system, reprogram ignition key identification numbers. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES - IMPORT article in GENERAL INFORMATION. If DTC P0116 is not present, go to next step.
- Perform DTC confirmation procedure. See DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any other DTC is present, go to appropriate test.
