Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda 626. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Ensure ignition is off. Check DLC for damage. Repair as necessary. If DLC is okay, ensure correct procedure was used to activate continuous memory, KOEO or KOER self-test on scan tool. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If correct procedure was used, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect Throttle Position (TP) sensor connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between TP sensor harness connector Gray/Red wire and Black/Yellow wire terminals. If 4-6 volts are present, reconnect TP sensor connector and go to next step. If 4-6 volts are not present, reconnect TP sensor connector and go to DTC P0122. See DTC P0122: THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR, LOW INPUT  .
  3. Attempt to access continuous memory DTCs. If continuous memory DTC can be accessed, go to next step. If continuous memory DTC can not be accessed, go to step  7 .
  4. Attempt to activate KOEO self-test. If KOEO self-test can be activated, go to next step. If KOEO self-test can not be activated, go to step  6 .
  5. Attempt to activate KOER self-test. If KOER self-test can not be activated, go to next step. If KOER self-test can be activated, check for any other KOER DTC. If any other KOER DTC is set, repair that DTC first. If no other KOER DTC is set, ensure vehicle is equipped with correct PCM. If PCM is okay, go to next step.
  6. Failure of following components or systems can prevent completion of KOER self-test or cause PCM to generate communication error message:
    • Idle speed control.
    • EGR system.
    • Fuel control system.
    • Vehicle speed signal circuits.
    • Mass Airflow sensor circuits.
    • Transmission range circuits.
    Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, check for continuous memory DTCs. Turn ignition off. If any DTCs are present, service as necessary before continuing. If no DTCs are present, go to next step.
  7. Inspect DLC for damage and repair as necessary. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between DLC terminal No. 16 (Blue/Red wire) and engine ground. See Figure . If more than 10.5 volts are present, go to next step. If 10.5 volts or less are present, repair open circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary and go to step  15 .
  8. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between DLC terminal No. 4 (Black wire) and ground. See Figure . Also measure resistance between DLC terminal No. 5 (Black/Orange wire) and ground. If less than 5 ohms are present in both circuits, go to next step. If 5 ohms or more are present in either circuit, repair open circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary and go to step  15 .
  9. Disconnect PCM connector. Measure resistance between PCM harness connector terminal No. 16 (Pink wire) and ground. See Figure . If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair short circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary.
  10. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 16 (Pink wire) and ground. If voltage is one volt or less, go to next step. If voltage is more than one volt, repair short circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary.
  11. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance in Pink wire between DLC terminal No. 2 and PCM harness connector terminal No. 16. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, repair open in Pink wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary and go to step  15 .
  12. Measure resistance between PCM harness connector terminal No. 15 (Blue wire) and ground. If resistance is more than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair short circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary.
  13. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between PCM harness connector terminal No. 15 (Blue wire) and ground. See Figure . If 6 volts or less is present, go to next step. If more than 6 volts is present, repair short circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary.
  14. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance in Blue wire between PCM harness connector terminal No. 15 and DLC terminal No.10. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace PCM. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
  15. Perform DTC confirmation procedure. See DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any other DTC is present, go to appropriate test.
