Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. Ensure FREEZE FRAME DATA has been recorded. Check for related service bulletins. Repair as necessary and go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off and then on, with engine off. Using scan tool, check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any other DTCs are present, go to appropriate test and repair first. If no other DTCs are present, go to next step.
  3. Start engine. Disconnect IAC valve electrical connector. Observe engine RPM. If engine RPM decreased, go to next step. If engine RPM did not decrease, replace faulty IAC valve. Go to step  7 .
  4. Turn ignition switch off. Check accelerator cable free play. Ensure throttle valve is at closed position. Throttle cable free play should be .12" (3 mm). If cable adjustment is okay, go to next step. If cable adjustment is needed, remove clip form accelerator cable. See Fig 1 . To adjust free play, pull accelerator cable until throttle lever starts moving. Loosen cable until free play is .12" (3 mm). Install throttle cable clip. Ensure throttle cable free play is within specification. Ensure correct accelerator operation. After accelerator cable adjustment is complete, go to next step.

  5. Check vacuum hose routing and connections. If vacuum hoses are okay, go to next step. If vacuum hoses are not okay, repair as necessary. See VACUUM DIAGRAMS article. After repair, go to step  7 .
  6. Remove throttle body assembly for inspection (if necessary). Verify throttle valve is fully closed. If throttle valve is fully closed, go to next step. If throttle valve is not fully closed, clean or replace throttle body assembly as necessary. Go to next step.
  7. Reconnect all connectors. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Start engine. Depress brake pedal for 14.1 seconds or more. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0507 is present, replace PCM and go to next step. If DTC P0507 is not present, go to next step.
  8. Cycle ignition switch from off to on. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no other DTCs are present, testing is complete. If any other DTC is present, go to applicable test and repair.
