Diagnosis & Repair Procedure

  1. Perform DTC confirmation procedure. See DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Check for DTCs during KOEO or KOER self-test. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If DTC P0480 is present, go to next step. If DTC P0480 are not present, problem is intermittent. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article.
  2. Turn ignition off. Remove cooling fan relay. See Figure . Check for loose, damaged or corroded connector terminals. Repair as necessary, and go to step  9 . If connector terminals are okay, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and cooling fan relay harness connector terminal "A" (Black/White wire). See Figure . If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair open in Black/White wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary and go to step  9 .
  4. Turn ignition off. Check cooling fan relay operation. See SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING - MIATA, MILLENIA, MPV, PROTEGE, PROTEGE5 & 626 article. Replace cooling fan relay as necessary and go to step  9 . If cooling fan relay is okay, go to next step.
  5. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and cooling fan relay harness connector terminal "F" (Blue/Black wire). If battery voltage is not present, go to next step. If battery voltage is present, repair short to power in Blue/Black wire between cooling fan relay and PCM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary and go to step  9 .
  6. Turn ignition off. Check for continuity between ground and cooling fan relay harness connector terminal "F" (Blue/Black wire). If continuity is not present, go to next step. If continuity is present, repair short to ground in Blue/Black wire between cooling fan relay and PCM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary and go to step  9 .
  7. Disconnect PCM connector. Check for loose, damaged or corroded connector terminals. Repair as necessary, and go to step  9 . If connector terminals are okay, go to next step.
  8. Check for continuity of Blue/Black wire between cooling fan relay harness connector terminal "F" and PCM harness connector terminal No. 45. See Figure . If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair open in Blue/Black wire between cooling fan relay and PCM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary and go to next step.
  9. Reconnect all connections. Turn ignition on. Clear DTCs. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Check for DTCs during KOEO or KOER self-test. If DTC P0480 is present, replace PCM and go to next step. See REMOVAL, OVERHAUL & INSTALLATION article. On vehicles equipped with immobilizer system, reprogram ignition key identification numbers. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES - IMPORT article in GENERAL INFORMATION. If DTC P0480 is not present, go to next step.
  10. Perform DTC confirmation procedure. See DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Check for DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If any other DTC is present, go to appropriate test.
