Torque Converter Clutch Operation Test

This test verifies that the torque converter clutch control system and the torque converter are operating properly.

1. Perform mechanical system test preparation. See MECHANICAL SYSTEM TEST PREPARATION .
2. Perform the on-board diagnostic test. If DTC P0743 is retrieved, repair it. See DIAGNOSTIC TESTS .
   WARNING:

   • Doing this test alone can be dangerous. You could have an accident if you are looking at the manual or devices while driving, which may result in death or injury. Always have another person in the vehicle with you to read the manual or devices while you drive.
3. Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature by driving the vehicle at highway speeds for approximately 15 minutes in D range.
4. After normal operating temperature is reached, maintain a constant vehicle speed of about 80 km/h {50 mph}, and tap the brake pedal with the left foot.
5. Engine RPM should increase when the brake pedal is tapped, and decrease about 5 seconds after the brake pedal is released. If this does not occur, refer to Torque Converter Operation Concern in TROUBLE SHOOTING .
6. If the vehicle stalls in D range at engine idle with the vehicle stopped, move the selector lever to the 1 range. If the vehicle stalls, the cause may be the converter control valve in the oil pump. Service as required. If the vehicle does not stall in the 1 range, refer to DTC troubleshooting. See DIAGNOSTIC TESTS .
