Clutch Assembly: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Mazda Tribute, 2001 Mazda Protege, and 2001 Mazda 626. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If replacing pilot bearing, drive in NEW pilot bearing until distance between pilot bearing and end of crankshaft is 0-.016" (0-0.4 mm). Ensure all bolts are clean and free of old sealant.
  2. Position clutch disc onto flywheel, with damper springs facing outward. Retain disc in place with clutch aligner. Position pressure plate over clutch disc and align marks made at removal (if reusing pressure plate).
  3. Install and tighten bolts to specification in a crisscross pattern. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Remove clutch aligner. Lightly coat input shaft splines with lithium grease.
  4. Install transaxle assembly by aligning input shaft through clutch disc splines. Align clutch housing onto engine guide pins. Install and tighten transaxle housing bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
