Removal (Millenia)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Mazda Millenia and 2001 Mazda 626. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE . Drain cooling system. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove spark plug wires. Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT . Remove air cleaner assembly and spark plug wires. Remove retaining bolt and distributor (if necessary). Remove intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLD .
  2. Remove upper radiator hose and thermostat housing. Install engine support. Remove through-bolt from No. 3 engine mount and remove bracket from front of engine. See Fig 1. Remove retaining bolts and seal plate from front of cylinder head. Remove front exhaust pipe.
  3. Remove generator bracket. Remove retaining bolts, cylinder head cover and gasket. Remove camshaft pulleys while holding camshafts with wrench on cast hexagonal area of camshaft. Remove camshafts. See CAMSHAFT .
    CAUTION: Cylinder head bolts must be loosened in proper sequence to prevent cylinder head warpage. See Figure.
  4. Temporarily install No. 3 engine mount to support engine. Remove engine support. Loosen cylinder head bolts in sequence using several steps. See Figure. Remove cylinder head bolts and washers, cylinder head and gasket.
