Valve Clearance Adjustment: 626
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Mazda Millenia and 2001 Mazda 626. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Ensure engine is cold. Remove intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLD under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove cylinder head cover. Turn crankshaft clockwise so lobes of cams needing adjustment are facing straight up. Remove camshaft cap bolts as needed. See Fig 2. Install Tappet Holder Clamp (49-T012-003) and Tappet Holder Shaft (49-T012-002) using camshaft cap bolt holes. See Fig 3.
- Align marks on tappet holder shaft and shaft clamp. See Fig 4. Tighten bolts "A" to secure shaft. See Fig 3. Rotate tappet to be adjusted so that a small screwdriver can be inserted into notch. Mount Tappet Holder Body (49-T012-001A) onto tappet holder shaft by notch in tappet.
- Tighten bolt "B" to secure body. Tighten bolt "C", and press down tappet just enough to remove shim. Using a small screwdriver and magnet, remove tappet shim. See Fig 3.CAUTION: Cylinder head can be damaged if tappet is pressed down too much.
- Select proper adjustment shim by adding thickness of removed shim and measured valve clearance, less standard valve clearance. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table. Install NEW adjusting shim into valve tappet.
- Loosen bolts "B" and "C", and remove tappet body. Repeat for each tappet to be adjusted. See Fig 3. Remove tappet holder assembly. Tighten camshaft bearing cap bolts in sequence. See Figure. Tighten all bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Install cylinder head cover and intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLD under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
