Test Y: Transmission Range Indicator Inoperative (DTC P0705)

  1. Using New Generation Star (NGS) tester, perform instrument cluster self-test. If DTC P1706 is retrieved, go to next step. If DTC P0705 is retrieved, see appropriate ELECTRONIC CONTROLS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. If neither DTC is retrieved, go to step  4 .
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C220b. See Figure . Set parking brake. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220b terminal No. 5 (Light Blue/Yellow wire) with transmission range selector in PARK and NEUTRAL positions. See Figure . Resistance should be less than 5 ohms with transmission range selector in PARK position and 10 k/ohms or more with transmission range selector in NEUTRAL. If resistance is not as specified, go to next step. If resistance is as specified, go to step  5 .
  3. Disconnect brake shift interlock 8-pin harness connector. Brake shift interlock is located behind left side of instrument panel. Measure resistance of Light Blue/Yellow wire between brake shift interlock harness connector terminal No. 7 and instrument cluster harness connector C220b, terminal No. 5. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220b, terminal No. 5 (Light Blue/Yellow wire). Resistance should be less than 5 ohms between brake shift interlock and instrument cluster, and 10 k/ohms or more between instrument cluster and ground. If resistance is as specified, repair shift interlock concern. See SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEMS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. If resistance is not as specified, repair open or short to ground in Light Blue/Yellow wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  4. Using NGS tester, select instrument cluster WARNING LAMPS AND CHIME active command. Trigger PRNDL LMP active command while scrolling through all ranges, and observe transmission range indicator. If transmission range indicator does not illuminate through all ranges, go to next step. If transmission range indicator illuminates through all ranges, repair shift interlock concern. See appropriate ELECTRONIC CONTROLS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.
  5. Disconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Inspect for corrosion or pushed out pins. Connect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Operate system and verify if concern still exists. If concern still exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If concern does not exist, system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
