Test X: 4 X 4 Indicator Inoperative

  1. Test drive vehicle and verify 4WD function. If 4WD operates properly, go to next step. If 4WD does not operate correctly, repair transfer case concern. See appropriate TRANSFER CASES article in TRANSMISSION SERVICE & REPAIR.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C220b. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220b, terminal No. 8 (Light Blue/Black wire on automatic transmission or Dark Blue wire on manual transmission). See Figure . If voltage is 10 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect 4WD switch 4-pin harness connector. 4WD switch is located behind center of instrument panel. Measure resistance of Dark Blue wire (Light Blue/Black wire on automatic transmission) between 4WD switch harness connector terminal No. 2 and instrument cluster harness connector C220b, terminal No. 8. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  4. Measure resistance between ground and 4WD switch harness connector terminal No. 2 (Dark Blue or Light Blue/Black wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step  6 If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in circuit. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  5. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220b, terminal No. 8 (Dark Blue or Light Blue/Black wire). See Figure . If voltage exists, repair short to voltage in circuit. If voltage does not exist, repair transfer case concern. See appropriate TRANSFER CASE article in TRANSMISSION SERVICE & REPAIR.
  6. Disconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Inspect for corrosion or pushed out pins. Connect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Operate system and verify if concern still exists. If concern still exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If concern does not exist, system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
