Test T: Low Coolant Indicator Inoperative/Always On - 3.0L Engine

  1. Using New Generation Star (NGS) tester, select instrument cluster WARNING LAMPS AND CHIME active command. Trigger ALL LAMPS active command and observe low coolant indicator. If low coolant indicator is always on, go to next step. If low coolant indicator illuminates, go to step  3 . If low coolant indicator does not illuminate, go to step  6 .
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C220b. See Figure . Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220b, terminal No. 12 (Light Blue wire). See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Light Blue wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace low coolant level switch.
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect low coolant level switch 2-pin harness connector. Low coolant level switch is located in right front side of engine compartment. Disconnect instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C220b. See Figure . Measure resistance of Light Blue wire between instrument cluster harness connector C220b, terminal No. 12 and low coolant level switch harness connector. See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Light Blue wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  4. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220b, terminal No. 12 (Light Blue wire). If voltage does not exist, go to next step. If voltage exists, repair short to voltage in Light Blue wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  5. Measure resistance between ground and low coolant level switch harness connector Black wire terminal. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace low coolant level switch. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire between low coolant level switch and ground. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Ground point is located near right front side of engine compartment.
  6. Disconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Inspect for corrosion or pushed out pins. Connect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Operate system and verify if concern still exists. If concern still exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If concern does not exist, system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
