Test L: Charge System Warning Indicator Never On

  1. Turn ignition switch to ON position and observe charge system warning indicator. Start engine and observe charge system warning indicator. Charge system warning indicator should illuminate for 3 seconds then turn off. If charge system warning indicator is not as specified and vehicle is equipped with 2.0L Zetec engine, go to next step. If charge system warning indicator is not as specified and vehicle is equipped with 3.0L engine, go to step  3 . If charge system warning indicator is as specified, system is operating properly at this time.
  2. Using New Generation Star (NGS) tester, select instrument cluster WARNING LAMPS AND CHIME active command. Trigger ALL LAMPS active command and observe charge system warning indicator. If charge system warning indicator does not illuminate, go to step  5 . If charge system warning indicator illuminates, repair charging system concern. See GENERATORS & REGULATORS - TRIBUTE article.
  3. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect generator 3-pin harness connector. Disconnect instrument cluster 18-pin harness connector C220c. Measure resistance of Light Green/Red wire between instrument cluster harness connector C220c, terminal No. 16 and generator harness connector. See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Light Green/Red wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  4. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220c, terminal No. 16 (Light Green/Red wire). If voltage does not exist, go to next step. If voltage exists, repair short to voltage in Light Green/Red wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  5. Disconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Inspect for corrosion or pushed out pins. Connect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Operate system and verify if concern still exists. If concern still exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If concern does not exist, system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
