Test H: Brake Warning Light Indicator Always/Never On

- Release parking brake and observe BRAKE warning indicator. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Observe BRAKE warning indicator. If BRAKE warning indicator does not light for 3 seconds then go out, go to next step. If BRAKE warning indicator lights for 3 seconds then goes out, system is operating correctly at this time.
- Apply parking brake and observe BRAKE warning indicator. If BRAKE warning light does not turn on when parking brake is applied, go to next step. If BRAKE warning light turns on when parking brake is applied, go to step 10 .
- Disconnect parking brake switch single pin harness connector, located near center console. Connect a 10-amp fused jumper wire between ground and parking brake switch harness connector Light Green/Red wire terminal. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If BRAKE warning indicator does not illuminate, go to next step. If BRAKE warning indicator illuminates, replace parking brake switch.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C220b. Measure resistance of Light Green/Red wire between parking brake switch harness connector and instrument cluster harness connector C220b, terminal No. 16. See Fig 1 . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, connect parking brake switch and go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Light Green/Red wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Connect instrument cluster harness connector C220b. Disconnect brake fluid level switch 2-pin harness connector, located on brake master cylinder. Connect a fused jumper wire between ground and brake fluid level switch harness connector Violet/White wire. Turn ignition switch to ON position. If BRAKE warning indicator illuminates, go to next step. If BRAKE warning indicator does not illuminate, go to step 8 .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance between ground and brake fluid level switch harness connector Black wire terminal. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black wire between brake fluid level switch and ground. SeeWIRING DIAGRAMS
- Measure resistance between brake fluid level switch terminals (component side) with brake fluid reservoir full, then empty. Resistance should be less than 5 ohms when brake fluid level is empty, and 10 k/ohms or more when brake fluid level is full. If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace brake fluid level switch.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect instrument cluster 18-pin harness connector C220c. See Figure . Measure resistance of Violet/White wire between instrument cluster harness connector C220b, terminal No. 12, and brake fluid level switch harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Violet/White wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Disconnect instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C220b. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220b, terminal No. 16 (Light Green/Red wire). See Fig 1 . Measure voltage between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220c, terminal No. 12 (Violet/White wire). If voltage does not exist at both terminals, go to next step. If voltage exists at either terminal, repair short to voltage in Light Green/Red wire or Violet/White wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Disconnect parking brake switch single pin harness connector, located near center console. Turn ignition switch to ON position and observe BRAKE warning indicator. If BRAKE warning indicator illuminates, go to next step. If BRAKE warning indicator does not illuminates, replace parking brake switch.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220c, terminal No. 12 (Violet/White wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Violet/White wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS
.NOTE: Brake fluid level switch is an integral part of brake master cylinder. If faulty, brake master cylinder must be replaced.
- Disconnect brake fluid level switch 2-pin harness connector, located on brake master cylinder. Turn ignition switch to ON position and observe BRAKE warning indicator. If BRAKE warning indicator illuminates, go to next step. If BRAKE warning indicator does not illuminate, replace brake master cylinder.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220b, terminal No. 16 (Light Green/Red wire). See Fig 1 . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Light Green/Red wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster harness connector C220b, terminal No. 6 (Dark Green wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to step 17 .
- Disconnect Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) control module 25-pin harness connector C155. Measure resistance of Dark Green wire between instrument cluster harness connector C220b, terminal No. 6 and ABS control module harness connector C155, terminal No. 15. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Dark Green wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and ABS control module harness connector C155, terminal No. 15 (Dark Green wire). See Fig 2 . If voltage exists, repair short to voltage in Dark Green wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If voltage does not exist, repair ABS concern. See appropriate ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES.
- Disconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Inspect for corrosion or pushed out pins. Connect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Operate system and verify if concern still exists. If concern still exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If concern does not exist, system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
