Test E: Speedometer/Odometer Inoperative

- Using New Generation Star (NGS) tester, perform Powertrain Control Module (PCM) self-test. If no DTCs are retrieved, go to next step. If any other DTCs are retrieved, perform appropriate test in accordance with DTC retrieved. See appropriate DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE INDEX table under RETRIEVING CODES .
- Using NGS tester, select instrument cluster SPDOMETER active command. Trigger SPDOMETER active command and scroll in increments of 10%. Monitor speedometer. Speedometer should increase in increment of approximately of 12 MPH for each 10% change. If speedometer is as specified, go to next step. If speedometer is not as specified, go to step 4 .
- Test drive vehicle while monitoring VSSPCM PID (manual transmission) or OSSPCM PID (automatic transmission). If OSSPCM PID or VSSPCM PID varies with vehicle speed, go to next step. If OSSPCM PID or VSSPCM PID does not vary with vehicle speed, repair speed sensor concern. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
- Disconnect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Inspect for corrosion or pushed out pins. Connect all instrument cluster harness connectors. Operate system and verify if concern still exists. If concern still exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If concern does not exist, system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector.
