Self-Diagnostic Mode

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Mazda Tribute. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Simultaneously depress and hold TRIPMETER RESET BUTTON and turn ignition switch to RUN position.
  2. Release TRIPMETER RESET BUTTON when TEST is displayed on odometer. This takes 5-8 seconds.
  3. Depress TRIPMETER RESET BUTTON once to move through each of the following tests. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TEST MODE  table. To exit instrument cluster test mode, turn ignition to OFF position. If no DTCs related to concern are retrieved, repair by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX  table under SYSTEM TESTS.
    INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TEST MODE

    Odometer Display Description
    GAGE Activates Gauge Sweep Of All Gauges, Then Displays Present Gauge Values. Carries Out Checksum Test On ROM & EEPROM
    All Segments Illuminated Illuminates All Odometer Segments
    BULB Illuminates All Micro-Controlled Lights & LEDs (Low Fuel, O/D OFF, MIL, THEFT, Seat Belt, BRAKE, ABS, Low Coolant (3.0L Engine) and Charge ( 2.0L Zetec Engine). Replace Bulb or LED As Necessary
    r Returns To Normal Operation All Micro-Controlled Lights & LEDs. Displays Hexadecimal Value For ROM Level
    NR Displays Hexadecimal Value For ROM Level & Type
    EE Displays Hexadecimal Value For EE Level
    DT Displays Hexadecimal Code For Final Manufacturing Date
    CF1 Displays Hex Coding For First Byte Of Module Configuration Settings. Speedometer Scaling 0=5% Bias, 1=2% Bias, Overspeed Warning 1=Enabled, Overspeed Trip Point 0=62 MPH, 1=74 MPH, ABS Option 1=Present, Reverse Warning 1=Enabled, Seat Belt Chime 1=Enabled, Seat Belt Timeout 0=None, 1=0-60 Seconds, THEFT Indicator 1=Flash With Key Off
    CF2 Displays Hex Coding Of Second Byte Of Module Configuration Settings. Transmission Type 0=Automatic Transmission, 1=Manual Transmission, Seat Belt Telltale 1=Enabled, Key Reminder Chime 1=Enabled, Engine Type 1=3.0L Engine, 0=2.0L Zetec Engine

    CF5 Displays Hex Coding Of NVM Module Configuration Settings. Dimming Enabled/Disabled 1=Enabled, RH/LH Drive 1=RH Drive, Rear/Front Defog 1=Front Defog, English/Metric Odometer 1=English
    DTC #### Displays Continuous DTCs. Pressing Reset Button Will Display Any DTCs Stored Before Proceeding To Next Step
    E ####.# Displays English Speed Value Being Input, Speedometer Will Indicate Present Speed
    Blank #### Displays Metric Speed Value Being Input, Speedometer Will Indicate Present Speed
    t #### Displays Tachometer Value Being Input To Instrument Cluster. Tachometer Will Indicate Present Speed. Display Will Show "0" If Input Is Not Received, If Input Received Is Invalid For One Second Or More, Or If Speed Is Zero
    F ### Displays Present Fuel Level Being Input To Instrument Cluster As A Ration. If Value Displayed is 255, Circuit Is Open. If Value Displayed Is 000-009, Circuit Is Shorted. Normal Range Will Be 10-254. If Value Displayed Is 250, Gauge Should Read Full. If Value Displayed Is 30, Gauge Should Read Empty
    FP ### Displays Present Fuel Level Percent Status In Decimal. Display Will Read 0-254 For Normal Range, With 255 Indicating An Open Or Short
    ### C Displays Last Temperature Gauge Input From SCP (J1850) Line. Temperature Gauge Will Indicate Present Temperature In Degrees Celsius
