WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Mazda Tribute, 2001 Mazda B4000, 2001 Mazda B3000, 2001 Mazda B2500, and 2001 Mazda B2300. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester and retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). See MODULE COMMUNICATION NETWORK - TRIBUTE article under ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Attend to any DTCs as necessary. If no DTCs are present, disconnect NGS and go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect generator connector X-102a. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using DVOM, measure voltage between generator connector terminal No. 1 (Gray/Orange wire) and ground. If voltage is present, go to next step. If no voltage is present, then go to step 4.
- Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector, located on center of firewall. Measure resistance of Gray/Orange wire between PCM harness terminal No. 59 and generator connector No. 1. See Figure. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair Gray/Orange wire between PCM and generator. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Retest system for normal operation.
- Reconnect PCM harness connector. Perform generator load test. See GENERATOR LOAD TEST under ON-VEHICLE TESTING. If generator checks out okay, go to next step. Replace generator if faulty, see GENERATOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Retest for normal operation.
- Disconnect PCM harness connector. Inspect terminals for corrosion or physical damage. Repair terminals if necessary then reconnect PCM harness. Retest system. If problem still exists, replace PCM. See appropriate ENGINE PERFORMANCE article.
