Timing Chain: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2001 Mazda MPV and 2000 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove lower engine covers. Drain engine oil. Remove intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLD .
  2. Install handle on center of tensioner pulley. Using handle, turn center of tensioner pulley clockwise to release pressure on drive belt. Remove drive belt. Remove Power Steering (P/S) pump pulley, pressure switch connector, pressure pipe, return hose, P/S pump cover and P/S pump.
    3. CAUTION: DO NOT remove IMRC cable bracket from housing. Removing bracket will change shutter valve angle resulting in poor engine running condition.
  3. Remove IMRC actuator. Remove high-tension lead and ignition coil. Remove transverse member and front pipe. Remove oil pan. See OIL PAN .
    4. CAUTION: DO NOT remove generator from vehicle.
  4. Disconnect generator, and suspend aside. Remove A/C compressor with A/C pipe connected. Suspend A/C compressor aside. Remove water pump drive belt cover. Rotate chain tensioner clockwise by hand to release pressure on belt. Remove drive belt. Replace shaft protector on crankshaft damper remover. Remove water pump drive pulley using Puller Set (303-009 & 303-457). See Fig 1.
  5. Using a razor knife, cut camshaft oil seal lip. Using a screwdriver, remove camshaft oil seal. Remove left cylinder head cover bolts in sequence. See Figure. Remove 2 nuts on right side of exhaust manifold to release wiring harness. Remove 2 nuts on right cylinder head cover to release wiring harness bracket.
  6. Raise and support vehicle. Loosen engine hanger installation bolts and engine hanger. See Fig 1. Remove right cylinder head cover bolts in sequence. See Figure.
  7. Install engine support and hanger, and suspend engine. Remove No. 3 engine joint bracket and rubber. Remove generator bracket. Hold crankshaft, and loosen lock bolt. Using crankshaft damper remover, remove crankshaft pulley.
  8. Using screwdriver, remove front oil seal. Remove engine front cover bolts and studs in sequence. See Fig 2. Remove Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor pulse wheel. Remove left chain tensioner. See Fig 1.
    9. CAUTION: DO NOT rotate crankshaft counterclockwise. Timing chains may bind, resulting in engine damage.
  9. Ensure timing marks on each sprocket is in TDC position. See Fig 3. Turn crankshaft clockwise so crankshaft keyway is in 3 o'clock position. Remove right side timing chain components in the following order: chain tensioner, tensioner arm, timing chain and chain guide. See Fig 4.
  10. Remove right camshaft. See CAMSHAFT . Remove camshaft oil seal housing.
  11. Rotate crankshaft clockwise 1 and 2/3 turns until keyway is in 11 o'clock position. Remove left side timing chain components in the following order: chain tensioner, tensioner arm, timing chain, chain guide and timing chain crankshaft sprocket. See Fig 4. Remove left camshaft. See CAMSHAFT .
