Rocker Arm & Valve Lash Adjuster: Removal

NOTE: Valve adjuster may also be referred to as Hydraulic Valve Adjuster (HLA)
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove right splash shield. Remove intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLD . Remove drive belt. See TIMING CHAIN . Remove P/S pump pulley and oil pump, with P/S pipes connected. See ENGINE .
  2. Remove IMRC actuator. See INTAKE MANIFOLD . Remove high-tension lead, condenser and ignition coil. Remove water pump drive belt cover, drive belt and drive belt pulley. Remove camshaft oil seal and seal housing. See TIMING CHAIN .
  3. Remove cylinder head covers, wiring harness and connector bracket, engine hanger, crankshaft pulley lock bolt, crankshaft pulley and camshaft caps. See TIMING CHAIN .
  4. NOTE: If reusing rocker arm and HLA, mark positions for reassembly reference. Ensure rocker arm does not slip into timing chain cover when removing rocker arm from engine front.
  5. Slightly lift camshaft. Remove twelve rocker arms. Remove HLA.
  6. Repeat steps  3 and  4 for each side.
