Cylinder Head: Removal

  1. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE . Drain cooling system. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove water pump. See WATER PUMP . Remove spark plug wires. Remove valve cover bolts in sequence. See Fig 1. Remove timing chain. See TIMING CHAIN . Install No. 3 engine mount rubber and joint bracket. See TIMING CHAIN .
  2. Raise vehicle, and loosen engine hanger bolts. Remove engine hanger. Remove ventilation pipe. Remove water by-pass tube installation stud bolt. Disconnect water bypass tube from cylinder head.
  3. Remove camshaft. See CAMSHAFT . Remove rocker arm. See Fig 2.
  4. CAUTION: Loosen cylinder head bolts in proper sequence to prevent cylinder head warpage. See Fig 3.
  5. Loosen cylinder head bolts in sequence using several steps. See Fig 3. Remove cylinder head bolts and washers, cylinder head and gasket. Repeat steps  3 and  4 for both sides of cylinder. Remove left cylinder head gasket.
