Removal & Installation: Camshaft: Removal

- Drain engine coolant. Remove water pump. See WATER PUMP . Remove timing chain. Remove No. 3 engine mount rubber and joint bracket. See TIMING CHAIN .
- Remove right engine hanger, ventilation pipe and water by-pass tube. See Figure.
- Loosen right camshaft thrust caps "1R" and "5R", using several passes. Loosen remaining right camshaft cap bolts in sequence, using several passes. See Fig 1.
- Remove right rocker arm. See ROCKER ARM & VALVE LASH ADJUSTER . Remove right cylinder head and gasket. See CYLINDER HEAD .
- Loosen left camshaft thrust caps "1L" and "5L", using several passes. Loosen remaining left camshaft cap bolts in sequence, using several passes. See Fig 2.
CAUTION:
Cylinder head and camshaft bearing caps are numbered to ensure proper reinstallation. When removed, ensure bearing caps remain with cylinder head they were removed from. DO NOT mix caps.
CAUTION:
Remove camshaft thrust bearing caps marked "1R" and "5R" first. DO NOT loosen any other bolts until thrust caps are removed. Failure to do so may result in damage to thrust caps.
CAUTION:
Cylinder head and camshaft bearing caps are numbered to ensure proper reinstallation. When removed, ensure bearing caps remain with cylinder head they were removed from. DO NOT mix caps.
