Test 2: A/C Inoperative Or Does Not Operate Properly

NOTE: Ambient temperature should be more than 50°F (10°C) for compressor operation.
  1. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) Tester (49-7088-0A0), or scan tool, to Data Link Connector (DLC). Start engine. Turn A/C-heater system to A/C position. Perform PCM Parameter Identification A/C Cycling Switch (PID ACCS) test. If PCM PID ACCS reads ON, go to step  3. If PCM PID ACCS does not read ON, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Connect manifold gauge set to service ports. If system pressure is 50-250 psi (3.4-17.2 kg/cm2 ), go to step  9. If system pressure is not 50-250 psi (3.4-17.2 kg/cm2 ), check system for leaks. Repair, evacuate, and charge A/C system as necessary.
  3. Disconnect A/C compressor clutch 2-pin harness connector G100. Start engine. Turn function selector switch to A/C position. Measure voltage between ground and A/C compressor clutch harness connector G100 terminal No. 1 (Gray/White wire). If more than 10 volts exists, go to next step. If 10 volts or less exists, go to step  5.
  4. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between ground and A/C compressor clutch harness connector G100 terminal No. 2 (Black wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace A/C compressor clutch coil. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open or high resistance in Black wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Recheck system operation.
  5. Remove clutch relay from Battery Junction Box (BJB) in left front of engine compartment. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and A/C clutch relay socket terminal No. 3 (Pink/Black wire). See Fig 1. If more than 10 volts exists, go to next step. If 10 volts or less exists, repair open in Pink/Black wire between fuse No. 17 (15-amp) in BJB and A/C clutch relay. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Recheck system operation.

  6. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and A/C relay socket terminal No. 1 (White/Violet wire). If more than 10 volts exists, go to next step. If 10 volts or less exists, go to step  16.
  7. Measure resistance between ground and A/C relay socket terminal No. 2 (Pink/Yellow wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace A/C clutch relay. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM 104-pin harness connector G175. Measure resistance of Pink/Yellow wire between A/C clutch relay socket terminal No. 2 and PCM harness connector G175 terminal No. 69. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open or high resistance in Pink/Yellow wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Recheck system operation.

  9. Measure voltage between ground and PCM harness connector G175 terminal No. 41 (Dark Green/Orange wire). If more than 10 volts exists, go to step  22. If 10 volts or less exists, go to next step.
  10. Disconnect dual-pressure switch 4-pin harness connector G1062. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and dual-pressure switch harness connector G1062 terminal No. 4 (Red/Yellow wire). See Fig 2 and Fig 3 . If more than 10 volts exists, go to next step. If 10 volts or less exists, go to step  12.

  11. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance of Dark Green/Orange wire between dual-pressure switch harness connector G1062 terminal No. 1 and PCM harness connector G175 terminal No. 41. See Fig 3. Measure resistance between ground and dual-pressure switch harness connector G1062 terminal No. 1. If resistance is less than 5 ohms between dual-pressure switch and PCM, and more that 10 k/ohms between ground and dual-pressure switch, replace dual-pressure switch. Recheck system operation. If resistance is more than 5 ohms between dual-pressure switch and PCM, and/or 10 k/ohms or less between ground and dual-pressure switch, go to next step.
  12. Disconnect A/C clutch cycling switch 4-pin harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and A/C clutch cycling switch harness connector G130 terminal No. 1 (Violet wire). See Fig 4. If more than 10 volts exists, go to next step. If 10 volts or less exists, go to step  14.

  13. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance of Red/Yellow wire between dual-pressure switch harness connector G1062 terminal No. 4 and A/C clutch cycling switch harness connector G130 terminal No. 4. See Fig 3and Fig 4 . Measure resistance between ground and dual-pressure switch harness connector G1062 terminal No. 4 (Red/Yellow wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms between dual-pressure switch and A/C clutch cycling switch and more than 10 k/ohms between ground and dual-pressure switch, replace dual-pressure switch. Recheck system operation. If resistance is 5 ohms or more between dual-pressure switch and A/C clutch cycling switch and 10 k/ohms or less between ground and dual-pressure switch, go to next step.
  14. Turn ignition off. Disconnect function selector switch 8-pin harness connector G294a. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and function selector switch harness connector G294a terminal No. 2 (Black/Light Blue wire). See Fig 5. If more than 10 volts exists, go to next step. If 10 volts or less exists, go to step  16.
  15. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance of Violet wire between function selector switch harness connector G294a terminal No. 4 and A/C clutch cycling switch harness connector G130 terminal No. 1. See Fig 4and Fig 5 . Measure resistance between ground and function selector switch harness connector G294a terminal No. 1 (Violet wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms between function selector switch and A/C clutch cycling switch and more than 10 k/ohms between ground and function selector switch, replace function selector switch. Recheck system operation. If resistance is 5 ohms or more between function selector switch and A/C clutch cycling switch and 10 k/ohms or less between ground and function selector switch, go to next step.

  16. Remove ignition relay from Central Junction Box (CJB). Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and ignition relay socket terminal No. 87 (White/Violet wire). If more than 10 volts exists, go to next step. If 10 volts or less exists, go to step  18.
  17. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance of White/Violet wire between ignition relay socket terminal No. 87 and A/C clutch relay socket terminal No. 1. See Fig 1 and Fig 6 . Measure resistance between ground and ignition relay socket terminal No. 87 (White/Violet wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms between relays and more than 10 k/ohms between ground and ignition relay, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more between relays and/or 10 k/ohms or less between ground and function selector switch, repair open or short in White/Violet wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Recheck system operation.

  18. Measure resistance between ground and ignition relay socket terminal No. 86 (Black wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open or high resistance in Black wire. Recheck system operation.
  19. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and ignition relay socket terminal No. 85 (Light Green/Violet wire). If more than 10 volts exists, go to step  21. If 10 volts or less exists, go to next step.
  20. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ignition switch 7-pin harness connector G250. Measure resistance of Light Green/Violet wire between ignition relay socket terminal No. 85 and ignition switch harness connector G250 terminal No. 1. See Fig 1 and Fig 6 . Measure resistance between ground and ignition relay socket terminal No. 87 (Light Green/Violet wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms between ignition relay and ignition switch connector, and more than 10 k/ohms between ground and ignition relay, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more between ignition relay and ignition switch connector, and/or 10 k/ohms or less between ground and ignition relay, repair open or short in Light Green/Violet wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Recheck system operation.
  21. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and ignition relay socket terminal No. 30 (Yellow wire). If more than 10 volts exists, replace ignition relay. If 10 volts or less exists, repair open in Yellow wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Recheck system operation.
  22. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors. Check each connector for corrosion, pushed out pins and proper terminal contact. Reconnect all PCM connectors. Recheck system operation. If fault still exists, replace PCM. Recheck system operation. If fault no longer exists, system is operating okay at this time. Fault may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. Clear DTCs and repeat self-diagnostic test.
