Possible Causes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Mazda MPV. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Left side crash sensor malfunction can be caused by open or short circuit in wiring harness between left side crash sensor and SAS control module, left side crash sensor malfunction or SAS control module malfunction.

  1. Inspect left side crash sensor

Turn ignition to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least one minute. Disconnect left side crash sensor harness connector and inspect connector. If left side crash sensor connector is damaged, replace air bag system wiring harness. If left side crash sensor connector is not damaged, go to next step.
  2. Inspect wiring harness between left side crash sensor & SAS control module

Turn ignition to LOCK position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Disconnect left side crash sensor. See SIDE CRASH SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Connect negative battery cable. Check for short to ground, short to power or open circuit between SAS control module connector No. 2, terminal No. 2Y and left side crash sensor connector terminal "A". See Figure & Figure . Check for short to ground, short to power or open circuit between SAS control module connector No. 2, terminal No. 2V and left side crash sensor connector terminal "B". If short to ground, short to power or open circuit is detected, replace air bag system wiring harness. If short to ground, short to power or open circuit is not detected, replace left side crash sensor. See SIDE CRASH SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to next step.
  3. Inspect SAS control module

Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect negative battery cable and wait at least one minute. Connect all SAS control module connectors. Connect left side crash sensor connector. Connect negative battery cable. Retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)  under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTCs B2444 and/or U2017 are retrieved, replace SAS control module. If DTCs B2444 and/or U2017 are not retrieved, test is complete.
