Possible Causes

Open or short circuit in wiring harness between right side air bag and SAS control module, right side air bag malfunction or SAS control module malfunction.

  1. Inspect right side air bag

    Using scan tool, inspect resistance for PID/DATA monitor PS-AB. See PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD  under DIAGNOSTICS. If resistance is 1.4-3.2 ohms and performing present malfunction diagnosis, replace SAS control module. See SAS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is 1.4-3.2 ohms and performing past malfunction diagnosis, test is complete. If resistance is not 1.4-3.2 ohms, go to next step.

  2. Inspect right side air bag connector

    Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Disconnect right side air bag module harness connector and inspect connector. See SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If right side air bag module connector is damaged, replace air bag system wiring harness. If right side air bag module connector is not damaged, go to next step.

  3. Isolate malfunction

    Connect leads of 2 ohm resistor across terminals of right side air bag module 2-pin connector. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTCS)  under DIAGNOSTICS. If DTCs B1996, B1997, B1998 and/or B1999 are retrieved, go to next step. If DTCs B1996, B1997, B1998 and/or B1999 are not retrieved, replace right side air bag module.

  4. Inspect SAS control module

    Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Check circuits for short to ground, short to power or open circuit between SAS control module connector No. 2, terminal No. 2D and left side air bag connector terminal "A", and SAS control module connector No. 2, terminal No. 2A and left side air bag connector terminal "B". See Figure & Figure . If faults are found in circuits, replace air bag system wiring harness. If faults are not found in circuits, replace SAS control module.
