Possible Causes

Open or short circuit in wiring harness between clockspring and SAS control module, clockspring malfunction, driver-side air bag module inflator No. 1 malfunction or SAS control module malfunction.

  1. Inspect driver-side air bag module inflator No. 2

    Using scan tool, inspect resistance for PID/DATA monitor D-ABAGR2. See PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD  under DIAGNOSTICS. If resistance is 1.5-3.7 ohms and performing present malfunction diagnosis, replace SAS control module. See SAS CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is 1.5-3.7 ohms and performing past malfunction diagnosis, test is complete. If resistance is not 1.5-3.7 ohms, go to next step.
  2. Inspect driver-side air bag module connector

    Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove driver-side air bag module. See DUAL-STAGE DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect driver-side air bag module connector. If driver-side air bag module connector is cracked or chipped, replace wiring harness. If driver-side air bag module connector is not cracked or chipped, go to next step.
  3. Isolate malfunction

    Connect leads of two 2 ohm resistors across terminals of 2-pin clockspring connectors for inflators No. 1 and 2. Connect negative battery cable. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using scan tool, inspect PID/DATA monitor OD-DAB2-ST. If PID readings are normal, replace driver-side air bag module. If PID readings are not normal, go to next step.
  4. Inspect clockspring

    Perform clockspring inspection. See CLOCKSPRING INSPECTION  under COMPONENT TESTING. If clockspring is okay, go to next step. If clockspring is not okay, replace clockspring. See CLOCKSPRING  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  5. Inspect wiring harness between clockspring & SAS control module

    Turn ignition to LOCK position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING SYSTEM  under DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM. Remove steering column cover and disconnect clockspring connector. Remove glove box and disconnect passenger-side air bag module connectors. Disconnect right and left side air bag module connectors. See SIDE AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect right and left side curtain air bag module connectors. See SIDE CURTAIN AIR BAG MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove right and left rear door lower trims and disconnect seat belt pretensioner connectors. See SEAT BELT PRETENSIONER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Partially peel back floor covering and disconnect all SAS control module connectors. Measure for short to ground, short to power or open circuit between SAS control module connector No. 1, terminal No. 1G and clockspring connector No. 1, terminal No. 1B. See Figure & Figure . Measure for short to ground, short to power or open circuit between SAS control module connector No. 1, terminal No. 1J and clockspring connector No. 1, terminal No. 1A. If short to ground, short to power or open circuit is detected, replace wiring harness. If wiring harness is okay and performing present malfunction diagnosis, replace SAS control module. If wiring harness is okay and performing past malfunction diagnosis, test is complete.
