Axle Shaft: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Mazda 626. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Install in reverse order of removal. Tighten all fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

CAUTION: The sharp edges of the axle shaft can slice or puncture the oil seal. Be careful when removing the axle shaft from the transaxle.

Axle Shaft Installation Note

  1. Install a new clip onto the axle shaft with the opening facing upward. See Fig 1 . Ensure that the diameter of the clip does not exceed 1.2" (30.5 mm).
  2. Apply grease to the ends of the axle shafts.
    CAUTION: The sharp edges of the axle shaft can slice or puncture the oil seal. Be careful when installing the axle shaft to the transaxle. The oil seals are damaged easily if this procedure is not done correctly.
  3. Push the axle shaft into the transaxle (left side) or intermediate shaft (right side). See Fig 2 .
  4. After installation, pull the front hub outward to confirm that the axle shaft is securely held by the clip.

Lock Nut Installation Note  - Install a new lock nut and stake it as shown in the illustration. See Fig 3 . Tighten lock nut to specification, see TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
