Cylinder Head - LH: Installation

CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket. Clean all sealing surfaces with Metal Surface Cleaner.
NOTE: The cylinder head bolts must be replaced with new bolts. They are torque-to-yield designed and cannot be reused.
  1. Position the LH cylinder head, gasket and install the bolts in the sequence shown.
    1. Tighten the bolts in six stages.
    2. Stage 1: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
    3. Stage 2: Tighten bolts 90 degrees.
    4. Stage 3: Loosen one full turn.
    5. Stage 4: Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).
    6. Stage 5: Tighten 90 degrees.
    7. Stage 6: Tighten 90 degrees.

  2. Install the water pump. Refer to WATER PUMP .
  3. Raise the vehicle.
  4. Install the LH exhaust manifold. Refer to EXHAUST MANIFOLD - LH .
  5. Install the oil level indicator tube nut.

  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Install the hydraulic lash adjusters.
    1. Lubricate the hydraulic lash adjusters with SAE 5W-20 motor oil.

  8. Install the camshaft followers.
    1. Lubricate the camshaft followers with SAE 5W-20 motor oil.

  9. Install the LH camshafts. Refer to CAMSHAFTS - LH .
  10. Install the coolant bypass tube. Refer to BYPASS TUBE .
  11. Install the lower intake manifold. Refer to LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD .
