Test Tb: Transmission Control Switch Is Not Operating Correctly (Except MAZDA & Ranger)

NOTE: After each service or repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Clear DTCs and repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Ensure all EEC-V systems are working properly and DTCs are no longer present.

Perform this test when instructed during RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  or if directed by other test procedures. This test is used to diagnose TCS, PCM and wiring harness circuits.

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect NGS tester. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Using NGS tester, select PCM PID. Cycle TCS, then hold switch depressed. If PID value agrees with TCS position, go to next step. If PID value did not agree with TCS position, go to step  3.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect PCM 104-pin connector and instrument cluster 11-pin connector. Inspect connectors for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. Install breakout box. Leave PCM disconnected. Measure resistance between instrument cluster connector terminal No. 1 (TCIL) and breakout box terminal No. 79. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, install NEW instrument cluster printed circuit. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair circuit between instrument cluster and PCM. Reconnect all component connectors.
  3. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and breakout box terminal No. 29 (TCS) with TCS in ON position. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, replace PCM and repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) . If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect TCS connector. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between ground and TCS connector terminal No. 1 (harness side). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair circuit as necessary. Reconnect all component connectors.
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Measure resistance between TCS connector terminal No. 2 (harness side) and breakout box terminal No. 29. Measure resistance between ground and TCS connector terminal No. 2 (harness side). If resistance is less than 5 ohms between TCS and PCM, and greater than 10 k/ohms between ground and TCS, replace TCS. If resistance is not as specified, repair circuit as necessary.
