Test Tb: Transmission Control Switch Is Not Operating Correctly (MAZDA & Ranger)

NOTE: For additional Transmission Control Switch (TCS) and Transmission Control Indicator Light (TCIL) testing, see appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
NOTE: After each service or repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Clear DTCs and repeat QUICK TEST. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Ensure all EEC-V systems are working properly and DTCs are no longer present.

Perform this test when instructed during RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST)  or if directed by other test procedures. This test is used to diagnose TCS, PCM and wiring harness circuits.

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove instrument panel fuse No. 2 (10-amp). Using a DVOM, check fuse resistance. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, reinstall fuse and go to step  3. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace fuse. Test system for normal operation. If fuse fails, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect PCM 104-pin connector. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. Install breakout box. Leave PCM disconnected. Measure resistance between breakout box terminal No. 29 (TCS) and terminals No. 24 and 77 (ground). See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, check circuit and related components for short to ground. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to power in TCS circuit.
  3. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between breakout box terminal No. 29 (TCS) and terminals No. 24 and 77 (ground) while cycling TCS several times. If voltage reading does not cycle when TCS is cycled, go to next step. If voltage reading cycles when TCS is cycled, replace PCM and repeat RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (QUICK TEST) .
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Remove fuse No. 2 (10-amp). Disconnect TCS connector. Inspect connector for loose, damaged or corroded terminals. Repair as necessary. Go to next step.
  5. Connect ohmmeter positive lead to TCS key power at the fuse panel. Connect negative lead to power terminal at TCS harness connector. Record resistance reading. Measure resistance between breakout box terminal No. 29 (TCS) and TCS signal terminal at TCS harness connector. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If both resistance readings are less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If any resistance reading is 5 ohms or more, repair open in TCS circuit. Remove breakout box. Reconnect all component connectors. Test system for normal operation.
  6. Measure resistance between breakout box terminal No. 29 (TCS) and terminals No. 71 and 97 (power). If resistance is more than 10 k/ohms, replace TCS. Remove breakout box. Reconnect all component connectors. Test system for normal operation. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short in TCS circuit.
