Test X: Seat Belt Warning Indicator Inoperative

  1. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect NGS tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Using NGS tester, monitor PID IGN_GEM or PID IGN_CTM while turning ignition switch to each position. If PID values agree with key positions, go to next step. If PID values do not agree with key positions, see appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article.
    WARNING: If vehicle is equipped with manual transmission, depress clutch while ignition switch is in START position.
  2. Retrieve and record continuous DTCs. Clear DTCs. Perform GEM on-demand self-diagnostic test. If no DTCs or DTC B1428 exists, go to next step. If DTC B1342 exists, check GEM connector terminals for corrosion or damage. If no problem is found, replace GEM. If DTC B1426 exists, go to step  9. If DTC B1462 exists, replace seat belt warning indicator switch.
  3. Check seat belt warning chime operation. If seat belt warning chime operates properly, go to next step. If seat belt warning chime is not operating properly, repair seat belt warning chime. See appropriate wiring diagram in WARNING SYSTEMS article.
  4. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, monitor PID SBLTLMP. Toggle active command SBLT LIGHT on and off. If PID SBLTLMP reads correct state, check GEM connector terminals for corrosion or damage. If no problem is found, replace GEM. Clear DTCs and retest system operation. If PID SBLTLMP reads ON-B, go to step  10s. If PID SBLTLMP reads OFFO-G, go to next step.
  5. Check oil pressure gauge operation. If oil pressure gauge operates properly, go to step  7. If oil pressure gauge does not operate properly, go to next step.
  6. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster 12-pin harness connector C-215. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 8 (Red/Yellow wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C-215. See Figure. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in Red/Yellow wire.
  7. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect remaining instrument cluster harness connector C-216. Measure resistance between terminal No. 8 at instrument cluster connector C-215 (component side) and terminal No. 10 at instrument cluster connector C-216 (component side). See Figure and Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  8. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) connector T-221 (2.5L) or T-2100b (3.0L and 4.0L). On 2.5L, measure resistance in Yellow wire between terminal No. 12 at GEM harness connector T-221 and terminal No. 10 at instrument cluster harness connector C-216. On 3.0L and 4.0L, measure resistance in Yellow wire between terminal No. 6 at GEM harness connector T-2100b and terminal No. 10 at instrument cluster harness connector C-216. See Figure and Figure or Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Yellow wire. Clear DTCs and retest system.
  9. On 2.5L, measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 12 (Yellow wire) at GEM harness connector T-221. On 3.0L and 4.0L, measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 6 (Yellow wire) at GEM harness connector T-2100b. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, check GEM connectors for corrosion or damage. If no problem is found, replace GEM. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Yellow wire. After repair, clear DTCs and retest system.
  10. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster 10-pin harness connector C-216. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) 26-pin harness connector T-221 (2.5L) or T-2100b (3.0L and 4.0L). Turn ignition switch to RUN position. On 2.5L, measure voltage at terminal No. 12 (Yellow wire) at GEM harness connector T-221. On 3.0L and 4.0L, measure voltage at terminal No. 6 (Yellow wire) at GEM harness connector T-2100b. See Figure or Figure . If voltage exists, repair short to voltage in Yellow wire. Clear DTCs and retest system. If voltage does not exist, go to next step.
  11. Using NGS tester, monitor PID SBLTLMP. Set active command SBLT LAMP to OFF. If PID SBLTLMP reads OFFO-G, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. If PID SBLTLMP does not read OFFO-G, check GEM connectors for corrosion or damage. If no problem is found, replace GEM. After repair, clear DTCs and retest system.
