Test J: Charge Indicator Always/Never On

  1. Disconnect generator 3-pin harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Connect a fused jumper wire between ground and Light Green/Red wire at generator harness connector. If charge indicator illuminates, repair charging system. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If charge indicator does not illuminate, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster 10-pin harness connector C-216. Measure voltage at terminal No. 2 (Yellow wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C-216. See Figure. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is less than 10 volts, repair open in Yellow wire.
  3. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between instrument cluster connector C-216 terminal No. 3 and Light Green/Red wire terminal at generator 3-pin harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster printed circuit and retest system. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair Light Green/Red wire and retest system.
