Test A: Fuel Gauge Inaccurate
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster 12-pin harness connector C-215. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage at terminal No. 8 (Red/Yellow wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C-215. See Figure. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open in Red/Yellow wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 2 (Black/White wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C-215. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/White wire.
- Ensure ignition switch is in LOCK position. Disconnect fuel gauge sending unit harness connector. For 2.5L engine, measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 8 (Black/Yellow wire) at fuel gauge sending unit harness connector. For 3.0L and 4.0L engine, measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 3 (Black/Yellow wire) at fuel gauge sending unit harness connector. See Figure. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, connect instrument cluster harness connector C-215 and go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Orange wire.
- Using Gauge Tester (49 0839 285), connect one gauge tester lead to terminal No. 5 (2.5L) or terminal No. 1 (3.0L and 4.0L) at fuel gauge sending unit harness connector. Connect second gauge tester lead to ground. Set gauge tester to 22 ohms. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Turn gauge tester on. Wait one minute. If fuel gauge reads "E" (empty), go to step 6. If gauge does not read "E", disconnect gauge tester and go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster 12-pin harness connector C-215. Measure resistance in Yellow/White wire between terminal No. 12 at instrument cluster harness connector C-215 and terminal No. 5 (2.5L) or terminal No. 1 (3.0L and 4.0L) at fuel gauge sending unit harness connector. See Figure. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, repair open in Yellow/White wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, go to step 8.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Set gauge tester to 145 ohms. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Wait one minute. If fuel gauge reads "F" (full), replace fuel gauge sending unit. If fuel gauge does not read "F", disconnect gauge tester and go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster 12-pin harness connector C-215. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 12 (Yellow/White wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C-215. See Figure. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair short to ground in Yellow/White wire. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Check printed circuit by measuring resistance between instrument cluster printed circuit terminals. See FUEL GAUGE PRINTED CIRCUIT RESISTANCE CHECK table. If all resistance readings are 5 ohms or less, replace fuel gauge and instrument cluster gauge amplifier. If any resistance reading is greater than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster printed circuit.
