Diagnostic Aids
Enter this procedure only when DTCs have not been successfully retrieved or if directed here from another test or chart. This symptom test is only intended to diagnose:
- ABS warning light circuit for open or short to ground.
- BRAKE warning indicator light circuit for open or short to ground.
- Malfunction in ABS proportioning system.
- Malfunction in ABS CM.
- ABS CM power (terminal "Z") circuits for low voltage (below 8.5 volts).
- Check for ABS related DTCs. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. If an NGS scan tool communication error message exists, repair according to procedures displayed on NGS scan tool. If communication error message still exists after making repairs, go to step 6 . If no ABS related DTCs are present, go to next step. If ABS related DTCs are present, perform appropriate diagnostic test in DIAGNOSTIC TESTS .
- Perform PID/DATA MONITOR PROCEDURE under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS. Select PIDs ABSLAMP (ABS warning light), BRKLAMP (BRAKE warning light) and B+ (battery power). If ABSLAMP and BRKLAMP PID values read ON after ignition switch has been turned to ON position for more than 4 seconds, go to step 5 . If ABSLAMP and BRKLAMP PID values read OFF after ignition switch has been turned to ON position for more than 4 seconds, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect ABS CM harness connector. Connect jumper wire between chassis ground and ABS CM harness connector terminal "X" for BRAKE warning indicator light (Pink wire) and terminal "W" for ABS warning indicator light (Pink/Blue wire). See Figure . Turn ignition switch to ON position. If ABS and BRAKE warning indicator lights do not go off, go to next step. If ABS and BRAKE warning indicator lights go off, replace ABS CM for internal open circuit.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connectors No. 2 and 4. Check for continuity between specified ABS CM harness connector terminals and instrument cluster harness connector terminals. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER HARNESS CONTINUITY CHECK
table. If continuity exists at each measurement, replace instrument cluster for internal open or short to ground. If continuity does not exist at either measurement, repair open in affected circuit between ABS CM and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS
.INSTRUMENT CLUSTER HARNESS CONTINUITY CHECK

See Figure . (2) Instrument cluster harness connector No. 2. See Figure . - Perform PID/DATA MONITOR PROCEDURE under ADDITIONAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS. Select PID B+ (battery power). If B+ PID voltage is more than 10 volts, replace ABS CM for internal open or short to battery power. If voltage is 10 volts or less, go to next step.
- Measure battery voltage. If battery voltage is normal, go to next step. If battery voltage is not normal, check battery and charging system. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
- Measure battery voltage with electrical load (headlights, A/C, etc.) on and engine operating at idle. If battery voltage is normal, go to next step. If battery voltage is not normal, check generator drive belt tension and generator. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
- Ensure harness connector and terminals at ABS CM are fully seated and securely connected. Repair connection or replace connector or terminal(s) as necessary. If connection is secure, go to step 10 .
- Reconnect all connectors and retest system. If ABS and BRAKE warning indicator lights go off after 4 seconds of ignition switch being turned to ON position, a temporary poor contact in wiring may have occurred and ABS is now functioning properly. If ABS and BRAKE warning indicator lights do not go off after 4 seconds of ignition switch being turned to ON position, check ABS CM power supply (terminal "Z") and ground circuit (terminal "AA") for opens or shorts. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Ensure ignition switch is turned to OFF position. Check continuity between ABS CM harness connector terminal "T" (Brown/White wire) and DLC-1 terminal No. 2 (Brown/White wire). See Figure and Figure . If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Brown/White wire between ABS CM and DLC-1. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Turn ignition switch to ON position. Measure voltage between chassis ground and ABS CM harness connector terminal "T" (Brown/White wire). See Figure . If voltage is not present, go to next step. If voltage is present, repair short to battery power in Brown/White wire between ABS CM and DLC-1 terminal No. 2. See WIRING DIAGRAMS .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Check continuity between chassis ground and ABS CM harness connector terminal "T" (Brown/White wire). See Figure . If continuity exists, repair short to ground in Brown/White wire between ABS CM and DLC-1 terminal No. 2. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If continuity does not exist, check ABS CM power supply (terminal "Z") and ground circuit (terminal "AA") for opens. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If ABS CM power supply and ground circuits are okay, replace ABS CM for malfunction in communication circuit.
