Test Y: 4WD High, 4WD Low Indicator Inoperative
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Connect NGS tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). Using NGS tester, monitor PID IGN_GEM while turning ignition switch to each position. If PID values agree with key positions, go to next step. If PID values do not agree with key positions, see appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article.
- Retrieve and record continuous DTCs. Clear DTCs. Perform GEM on-demand self-diagnostic test. If no DTCs or DTC P1804, P1806, P1808 or P1810 exist, go to next step. If DTC B1342 exists, replace GEM.
- If 4WD HIGH indicator is inoperative, go to step 7. If 4WD LOW indicator is inoperative, go to step 13. If 4WD HIGH and 4WD LOW indicators are inoperative, go to next step.
- Verify O/D indicator light operation. If O/D off indicator light operates properly, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. Clear DTCs and retest system operation. If O/D off indicator light does not operate properly, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C-214. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage at terminal No. 5 (Orange/Black wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C-214. See Figure. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. Clear DTCs and retest system operation. If voltage is less than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect headlight switch harness connector. Measure resistance in Orange/Black wire between terminal No. 5 at instrument cluster harness connector C-214 and terminal No. 8 at headlight switch harness connector. See Figure and Figure . Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 5 (Orange/Black wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C-214. Resistance should be 5 ohms or less between instrument cluster and headlight switch and greater than 10 k/ohms between ground and instrument cluster. If resistance is as specified, repair headlight system and/or replace headlight switch as necessary. See appropriate wiring diagram in HEADLIGHT SYSTEMS article. If resistance is not as specified, repair open or short to ground in Orange/Black wire.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, monitor PID 4WDHIGH. Toggle active command HIGH LAMP ON and OFF. If 4WD indicator operates properly during active command, indicator light circuit is okay. Repair input signal to GEM. See appropriate TRANSFER CASES article in TRANSMISSION SERVICE & REPAIR, IMPORTED VEHICLES. If 4WD indicator does not operate properly during active command and PID 4WDHIGH reads ON-B, go to step 11. If 4WD indicator does not operate properly during active command and PID 4WDHIGH reads OFFO-G, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) 22-pin harness connector T-223. Using a jumper wire, ground terminal No. 14 (Gray wire) at GEM harness connector T-223. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If 4WD HIGH indicator illuminates, replace GEM. Clear DTCs and retest system. If 4WD HIGH indicator does not illuminate, go to next step.
- Remove 4WD high indicator bulb. Check for continuity between 4WD high indicator bulb terminals. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace bulb. Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Disconnect instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector T-214. Measure resistance in Gray wire between terminal No. 14 at GEM harness connector T-223 and terminal No. 3 at instrument cluster harness connector C-214. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. Clear DTCs and retest system. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Gray wire. Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C-214. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, monitor PID 4WDHIGH. Toggle active command HIGH LAMP ON and OFF. If PID 4WDHIGH reads ON-B, go to next step. If PID 4WDHIGH does not read ON-B, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) 22-pin harness connector T-223. Measure voltage at terminal No. 14 (Gray wire) at GEM harness connector T-223. See Figure. If voltage exists, repair short to voltage in Gray wire. Clear DTCs and retest system. If voltage does not exist, replace GEM. Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, monitor PID 4WDLOW. Toggle active command LOW LAMP ON and OFF. If 4WD indicator operates properly during active command, indicator light circuit is okay. Repair input signal to GEM. See appropriate TRANSFER CASES article in TRANSMISSION SERVICE & REPAIR, IMPORTED VEHICLES. If 4WD indicator operates properly during active command and PID 4WDLOW reads ON-B, go to step 17. If 4WD indicator does not operate properly during active command and PID 4WDLOW reads OFFO-G, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) 22-pin harness connector T-223. Using a jumper wire, ground terminal No. 10 (Light Blue/Black wire) at GEM harness connector T-223. See Figure. If 4WD LOW indicator illuminates, replace GEM. Clear DTCs and retest system. If 4WD LOW indicator does not illuminate, go to next step.
- Remove 4WD low indicator bulb. Check for continuity between 4WD low indicator bulb terminals. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, replace bulb. Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Disconnect instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C-214. Measure resistance in Light Blue/Black wire between terminal No. 10 at GEM harness connector T-223 and terminal No. 2 at instrument cluster harness connector C-214. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Light Blue/Black wire. After repair, clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster 16-pin harness connector C-214. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using NGS tester, monitor PID 4WDLOW. Toggle active command LOW LAMP ON and OFF. If PID 4WDLOW reads ON-B, go to next step. If PID 4WDLOW does not read ON-B, replace instrument cluster printed circuit. Clear DTCs and retest system.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) 22-pin harness connector T-223. Measure voltage at terminal No. 10 (Light Blue/Black wire) at GEM harness connector T-223. See Figure. If voltage exists, repair short to voltage in Light Blue/Black wire. Clear DTCs and retest system. If voltage does not exist, replace GEM. Clear DTCs and retest system.
