Test H: Tachometer Inaccurate
NOTE:
If vehicle is equipped with 4-cylinder engine, start at step 2.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector C-216. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 8 (Black/Yellow wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C-216. See Figure. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Yellow wire between instrument cluster and ground and retest system.
- Disconnect remaining instrument cluster harness connectors. Measure resistance of printed circuit between tachometer pins (in center of clips) and corresponding instrument cluster connector terminals. See TACHOMETER PRINTED CIRCUIT MEASUREMENTS table. If all resistance readings are 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If any resistance reading is greater than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster printed circuit.
- Disconnect negative battery cable and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) harness connector. Install EEC-V 104-Pin Breakout Box (014-00950) following manufacturer's instructions. Measure resistance between terminal No. 15 (Tan/Yellow wire) at instrument cluster harness connector C-214 and terminal No. 48 at breakout box. See Figure. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 48 at breakout box. If continuity to ground does not exist and resistance is less than 5 ohms between PCM and instrument cluster connector, replace tachometer. If continuity to ground exists or resistance is 5 ohms or greater between PCM and instrument cluster connector, replace PCM.
