ABS-5 DTC 53 (Motor & Motor Relay)

  1. Check motor relay. If motor continues operating after ignition is off, motor relay may be faulty. See RELAY BOX (MOTOR RELAY RESISTANCE TEST) under COMPONENT TESTING.
  2. If motor relay is okay, check ABS PUMP fuse (60-amp) in main fuse box. Main fuse box is located in engine compartment. If ABS PUMP fuse is okay, check for open or short to ground in wiring harness between motor relay and hydraulic unit or ABS control unit. See RELAY BOX (MOTOR RELAY HARNESS TEST) under COMPONENT TESTING.
  3. If open or short in wiring harness does not exist, turn ignition on and check motor relay terminal voltage at ABS control unit connector. See Figure or Figure . If voltage is not as specified, check wiring harness between motor relay and ABS control unit. If voltage is as specified, go to next step.
  4. Check motor for open. See HYDRAULIC UNIT (MOTOR TEST) under COMPONENT TESTING. If motor is okay, check for open in wiring harness between motor and ground. If okay, check for open or short to ground in wiring harness between motor and ABS control unit.
  5. If open or short in wiring harness does not exist, check ABS warning light operation. If ABS warning light illuminates constantly after turning ignition switch to ON position, replace ABS control unit.
  6. If ABS warning light does not illuminate after turning ignition switch to ON position, a temporary poor contact in wiring may have occurred and ABS system is now functioning properly.
