Removal - Protege & 323
- Disconnect negative battery cable and distributor lead. Disconnect airflow meter connector and remove air cleaner assembly. Raise and support vehicle. Drain transaxle.
- Disconnect speedometer cable and throttle cable assemblies from transaxle. Disconnect inhibitor switch, overdrive release solenoid connectors and remove ground cable from transaxle case. Disconnect and remove selector cable.
- Remove heater pipe and disconnect oil hoses from transaxle and plug hose ends. Support engine from above with engine support assembly. Remove left front wheel, splash shield and remove engine under cover.
- Remove left side stabilizer bar control link. Remove bolts and nuts at left and right lower control arm ball joints. Pull lower arms downward to separate from knuckles. DO NOT damage ball joint dust boots.
- Separate left side axle shaft from transaxle by prying with a bar inserted between shaft and case. DO NOT damage oil seal. Install (49 G030 455) or equivalent into differential side gear opening (to prevent side gears from becoming misaligned).
- Separate right axle shaft from transaxle and remove starter motor. Support transaxle from below with transmission jack and remove front engine mount through bolt. Remove crossmember. Remove front torque converter housing access plates and cover. Index mark converter to drive plate and remove torque converter bolts.
- Slightly lower engine with engine support from above. Remove transaxle securing bolts and lower transaxle assembly from vehicle.
