Cylinder Head: Removal

  1. Drain engine coolant. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove exhaust and intake manifolds.
  2. Note locations and disconnect all necessary electrical connectors, ground wires, vacuum hoses, fuel hoses, coolant hoses and control cables for cylinder head removal. Plug all fuel hoses to avoid leakage.
  3. Reference mark spark plug wires, and remove them from spark plugs. Remove distributor cap with plug wires attached. Remove spark plugs. Remove all drive belts and pulleys. Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Remove camshaft/rocker cover.
  4. Reference mark distributor housing base-to-cylinder head position. Mark distributor rotor-to-distributor housing position. Remove distributor assembly. Remove front and rear engine hanger brackets. Remove camshaft sprocket(s) and seal plate.
  5. Loosen all cylinder head bolts evenly in sequence, in 2-3 steps. See Figure. Remove bolts and cylinder head assembly.
