Removal (B2600i 4WD)

  1. Raise vehicle on hoist or support vehicle with stands. Remove front axle outer hub drive flange. Remove brake caliper and hang out of way. Disconnect tie rod end using Tie Rod Puller (49-0118-850C ). Disconnect stabilizer bar and lower shock absorber mount.
  2. Remove axle shaft snap ring and spacer. Remove set lock screws and bearing set lock plate. Using bearing Lock Nut Puller (49-S231-635 ), remove lock nut. Remove hub assembly without allowing washer and bearing to fall out. Remove dust cover from steering knuckle. Support lower suspension arm with a jack. Disconnect both ball joints from steering knuckle using Puller (49-0727-575 ). See Fig 1.

  3. Using jack to lower the suspension arm, remove knuckle assembly from axle shaft. Inspect knuckle seal and needle bearing. Replace as required. Remove engine splash shield. Remove axle shaft from front differential using pry bar or drift and hammer. To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
NOTE: On all models, DO NOT  disassemble outer CV joint. Replace outer axle shaft and CV joint as an assembly. Outer boot may be serviced only after inner CV joint has been removed.
NOTE: On Protege and 323 models, BEFORE disassembling right axle shaft assembly, measure and record dynamic damper position from axle shaft end. See Figure.
