Wheel Bearing
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel assembly. Remove brake caliper and wire out of way. Install a dial indicator against wheel hub and measure axial movement. Axial movement should be zero. If specification is exceeded, adjust preload or replace wheel bearing.
- To adjust preload, remove knuckle assembly from vehicle See WHEEL BEARING REMOVAL and place in vise. Attach Spacer Selector (49 B001 727). Attach spring scale to caliper mounting hole and adjust preload to .53-2.55 lbs. (2.4-11.4 N) by tightening spacer selector.
- Tighten spacer selector in steps of 36 ft. lbs. (49 N.m) to a maximum of 145 ft. lbs. (196 N.m). If preload is not within specification, change spacer to meet required preload specification.
- Spacers are available in 21 sizes from .2474" (6.285 mm) to .2789" (7.085 mm) in increments of .0016" (.040 mm). Spacers are marked 1-21 to indicate size. Reverse procedure to complete adjustment.
NOTE:
If bearing preload is too high, increase spacer thickness. If bearing preload is too low, decrease spacer thickness.
