Wheel Bearing
- Raise vehicle and support with safety stands. Check bearing axial play by rocking wheel assembly by hand. Axial play should be zero. Remove wheel assembly. On disc brake models, remove brake caliper and hang out of way.
- Attach spring scale to wheel stud and measure bearing preload. Ensure brakes do not drag on drum brake models. Preload should be .57-1.91 lbs.(2.6-8.5 N).
- If preload is not within specification, adjust or replace wheel bearing. To adjust tighten new bearing lock nut to 18-22 ft. lbs. (25-29 N.m.). Rotate drum or rotor 2 or 3 times to seat bearing. Loosen nut until nut can be turned by hand. Attach spring scale to wheel stud and note oil seal resistance
- Tighten axle nut until reading on scale is .57-1.91 lbs. (2.6-8.5 N) more than oil seal resistance measured in step 3).
